Short summary, as I won't be making sense and can't string a sentence together at the moment:
- 2 of our GSDs escaped today - Guards arrived up to the house - They have killed sheep today - We went up to the farm, saw the bodies and one sheep dying. - Farmer was not present, but land owner was - Police and landowner were in contact with the farmer by phone - They want the two dogs pts in the morning - Meet farmer/landowner/police tomorrow at 3pm to see the dead sheep and have a letter of confirmation that they are pts. I don't know what to do, I know that we can't keep them now, the guards have warned us that the landowner is 'not right in the head and wouldn't think twice about coming up to our house and shooting them'. Also 'they can't protect us all of the time' and 'the station is too far from our house, in emergency'. I can't even get my head straight at the moment, Is there anything I/we can do. The two are secure now and can't get out, but we don't have long. They are such lovely dogs, I am in shock. It's not their fault, if anything it is ours, I don't want their lives to end because of something us as owners should have had more cop on to. Please, if you can think of anything. Post here, or PM me, I will check this post all night/tomorrow morning. |

Ideally need more info on the dogs.
Ages, sexes, temperament (other than with sheep), neutered, vacc'd with cards that can be handed over. We can certainly help if fully vacc'd and someone can hold till transport can be arranged. -------------------- |

You really need to check the law on this. From what i can see the farmer can shoot the dogs if he catches them on his land. Also you are financially responsible to the farmer for the damage if it is your dogs that have definately done the killing.
I do not know if the dogs legally have to be pts after this but it will undoubtably be very hard for you to keep them. Personally if i were you i would contact the farmer and pay up (assuming i was confident it was my dogs) and reason with the guards and find out the law and if it would be acceptable to rehome them far far away from livestock. .......of course i am not sure if rescues would be willing to take them on and try to rehome either. At the end of the day the farmer will be concerned about 2 things, the loss to his pocket now and any potential losses in the future. We also have 2 GSD's and sheep across the road from us and really if they got out there they would probably do the same. Hopefully you manage to sort something out. |

Get them into boarding kennels ASAP and tell him they are gone till you can sort it out. Try Canine Country Club in GSD'S

If buying time is of the essence, here's what I would do:
You said "two of our GSDs" - how many have you got and how distinguishable are they of each other? Can they be easily told apart or not? If not, demand a DNA saliva sample to identify the two "guilty" ones in order to avoid the wrong dogs being pts; in the interim, place the dogs in boarding kennels away from your house and arrange for rescue spaces. Ask the garda is it acceptable to rehome the dogs outside the country if until then they are not kept under your control. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. We already said yesterday that we would compensate the sheep owner. He is saying 100Euro per sheep and 30 of them have been killed. The police themselves have doubted this and that's the reason we have to view the remains today.
The landowner is widely known around the area for his mad behaviour. He spends at least 6 months of the year in prison, the police have warned us over and over again that if we dispute what he says our lives won't be worth living around here (not his exact words). Anyway on to a better note, the dogs are getting out of here now and the person taking them will liase with the police for us. They will then go to Chris and maybe that girl looking for a white GSD will be in touch. Fiona |

Or maybe someone is seeing a chance of increasing the profit from these sheep by adding a few extra to actual tally. 100 euros per sheep seems an awful lot, considering what they fetch at market nowadays....

30 sheep does seem a huge amount for one dog and effectively a pup (1yr old??)
I can only sympathise, it is an awful situation and i am sure very traumatic for you all. |
